What is 192.168.1.1

192.168.1.1 is an IP address that is usually used by Linksys broadband routers. This same address can also be utilized by other brands of network routers. An IP address stands for Internet protocol, it is a numeric identification that is assigned to any device that is part of a computer network, and this is because every machine and device in a network is supposed to hav a unique IP address.

These addresses are numeric addresses that are divided into four parts which are separated by dots. A set of these numbers is classed as a private IP addresses and they range from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255. These numbers are reserved and are always unique compared to other IP addresses and they are only unique within the network they belong.

A computer, printer as well as other devices can be set to use this same address instead of using a router although it is not very common. When connecting a router to use this address there a few points you willl need to consider. One of this is always knowing your router's IP address. PC's, iPods and other devices can typically find their router by its name (SSID) whenever they need to get online. Knowing this address is important especially when setting up a new router initially or when trying to troubleshoot a home network problem.

If the router has this address you can connect to it by opening a web browser and visiting http://192.168.1.1 ; this will allow you to log into the router's administrator console and access its configuration screens. However this procedure may fail due to a number of reasons that will include the router failing and being unresponsive to connections via the browser, the router may be set up to use a different address or the computer and its browser failed to join the network. All the network-troubleshooting steps should be followed in order to determine why a router set up using this address is not responding.

Determining your router's IP address can be done through checking the manufacturer's documentation or website. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1 are also other common router addresses. Routers that are set yup to use this address and are working fine there is a possibility that the network set up may be wrong. Troubleshooting this will help you determine which of the many possibilities could be the problem.

First time users who are configuring their home networking devices such as broadband routers and want to provide a standard computing environment for most of the network hardware manufacturers such as Linksys, Netgear, Westell among others are supposed to use a default IP address in order to access their devices.

This is supposed to be typed in the address bar of your browser and press enter. It is easier to configure all the settings of the broadband router in your browser window. The IP address is a private IPv4 address and any computer, router, modem or any other internet device can be configured using this IP address. However, this IP address cannot be used on Internet and thus these devices cannot be configured through the internet.
